Sodium Percarbonate

Sodium Percarbonate

Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.

Typically used as a cleaning agent, it is a compound of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. Sold commercially as "Oxy-Clean" and various other names. For use in cleaning barrels, mix 0.25 to 0.5 ounces per gallon of barrel in cold or warm water, and dissolve completely. Pour into barrel, and top up with water (do not use hot water, it will release the hydrogen peroxide too quickly). Soak for a few minutes, up to a few hours. The longer the soak the more tannins will be extracted from the wood, reducing the life and flavor of the barrel. Drain the barrel, rinse with water, and rinse the inside of the barrel with a citric acid solution (1 tbsp citric acid per 5 gallons water) to neutralize the caustic sodium carbonate. For general cleaning of equipment, use .5 to 1 ounces per gallon of water.

Usage: 0.25 to 1.0 ounces per gallon of water
Chemical name: Sodium percarbonate

Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate >= 85%
Carbonic acid sodium salt (1:2) <= 13%
Sodium silicate SiO2/Na2O <= 1.5%

First bought sodium per carbonate as an all purpose bleach alternative from the brand the lawn dress. I looked at the ingredient list, and this was the only thing in there! So now I buy it bulk and just refill my pretty “the laundress” bottle

Is this 100% sodium percarbonate or bulk Oxy-Clean? (Oxy-Clean is only 20-30% sodium percarbonate)
Michael Meadows on Jun 27, 2019
Is this 100% sodium percarbonate?? "Oxyclean" is not 100% sodium percarbonate - it has sodium carbonate plus other ingredients.
Karl smith on May 21, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Check the description for the composition, morebeer has updated it with all three chemicals. It's not exactly the same as oxyclean, but the extra chemicals in oxyclean aren't ones you want on your brewing surfaces. Use 160ish degree water, follow the dosage instructions and let soak for 30 minutes, you won't miss the other chemicals. Took two years of coffee stains off the inside of my coffee thermos in about 15 minutes...
Described as a barrel cleaner; comments about household use. I.m not seeing why it could not be also for routine use on brewing equipment; significantly higher concentration of sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate than pricier Craft Meister Oxygen Brewery Wash. Any comments on such use?

BEST ANSWER: I’ve been using it on my brew equipment for years. It’s a dominant ingredient in both Oxiclean and PBW. I have recently been using nonscented dish soap to cut the hop oils, because the percarbonate does not cut oils very well, but certainly chomps right through organic material. Another useful purpose is removing labels on bottles. Submerge your bottles in it overnight and they come right off. Perfectly safe use on household products, but do be aware of different types of metal and plastics. I use it on stainless steel, silicone hose and quick disconnects which are plastic and I haven’t noticed any degradation of those parts. Hope this helps.
is this a no rinse cleanser?
Thomas Wilkinson on Apr 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You have to rinse thoroughly. It is a very strong detergent and the residue stays on the surface unless it is rinsed. The cleaner will strip most chemicals and debris because of its corrosive qualities.

This chemical has so many useful uses not only laundry and yours is priced just right. I use it in every washing load. I used it also to get rid of a spot of mold in the tub. It's better than bleach.

Cheaper than PBW
Seems to clean just as well as PBW. Used on SS and plastic speidel fermenters with no issues. I soak overnight and rinse thoroughly so that probably helps.

EXCELLENT cleaning additive
Why buy Oxy-Clean when you can get this highly concentrated Sodium Percarbonate for a fraction of the price. We have been using this for years as an additive to our laundry operations. Super charges the detergent for a far more effective cleaning.
I imagine Sodium Percarbonate has other cleaning applications too. Think I will try it as a pre-soak next time I pressure clean my wood fences or my tiled patio. Don't know it it would be safe to use on my house exterior to clean off mildew without damaging the paint.
