Description

PBW stands for Powder Brewery Wash, which is a non-hazardous buffered alkaline brewery cleaner. It is cleaner of choice for many breweries where it out performs more hazardous caustic chemicals without removing the flesh off your bones. It will not corrode soft metals. Even better deal on bulk quantity. Comes in a jar with screw top lid.

When mixing hot water and PBW in an air or water tight space, it will create pressure. Please use caution when using PBW in enclosed equipment.

How many times can I use the 1lb PBW for a 5 gallon batches?
JamesC814366206 on Aug 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I found this in the articles for how much to use. "Add 1 to 1.5 oz of PBW per gallon of water and stir to mix it in thoroughly. The solution is now ready to be used."
Is this also a sanitizer?
James M on May 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This is not a sanitizer. This PBW is only a detergent for cleaning solids and stains off of equipment. For a sanitizer we recommend Five Star Starsan or BTF Iodophor.
Can I use this product to clean my bottles prior to sanitizing?
WAYNE K on Feb 15, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely! PBW can be used to clean everything! A thorough sanitizing rinse will also perfectly wash off all residual cleaner.
Can this be used on a wine filtration system?
Gregory M on Jul 13, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely! This can be used on all stainless, plastic, rubber, pvc, silicon, vinyl, and glass pieces of your filter system. The pads themselves might not work with this cleaner as most of the time they are just meant for one time use. However it is worth a shot to see if you can clean or flush your pads. After soaking with PBW the best way to rinse is to use an acid sanitizer such as Starsan. Acid will neutralize and rinse off the cleaner very efficiently.

Will it stop a ferment if accidentally added at 1 teaspoon per gallon? I think I may have done that and trying to identify the reason for the fail
jeff on Oct 22, 2020
BEST ANSWER: That would likely disrupt your fermentation. That amount of this would raise your pH; how high depends on your starting water profile. Yeast really like to be in a moderately acidic pH range. Most yeast will produce a lot of acid at the start of a fermentation and that helps them get comfy. A pack of the full range testing strips will work well for testing. Some people find them hard to read and prefer a digital meter. If your pH is above 5 then you could try to correct by adding some phosphoric acid and a new batch of yeast. Not an easy problem to solve and it would probably take less time to brew a new batch instead. Hopefully you can resolve the issues. Cheers!

Best Choice
We have been using oxi-clean free for all our cleaning needs for years; tried this at the recommendation of other brewers and I wish we had done this years ago! Oxi-clean is good for mild stains and general cleaning but PBW goes beyond and makes cleaning stains/burnt on crud a breeze! We rarely have to even scrub much anymore, instead just let them soak for a couple hours.

It's PBW!
There will always be debate about making your own cleaner or using certain brands of laundry booster, but in my opinion there's no beating PBW for cleaning containers or equipment in clean-in-place systems. I've tried using "laundry booster" with my home-made keg/carboy washer but had to keep cycling the pump on and off due to excessive foaming. With water over 100 degrees F, foaming hasn't been an issue at all. It also works great when soaking labels off import .5 liter bottles and doesn't leave the residue that phosphate free TSP will. It's more expensive than some of the other options out there, but it seems to have an indefinite shelf life and buying in bulk makes a huge price difference.

Great Product
It's easy to forget these minor ingredients in the brew process, but this one works perfectly and exactly as advertised. Not harsh, but a very effective cleaner for all brew equipment.

Best Cleaner Out there
I buy mine in 4lbs quantities. I have found this lasts for a long while since I only use about 3oz per 5 gallons of cleaner. I've even used this for laundry. Definitely worth the purchase that every home brewer needs. Remembers sanitizer only sanitizes and cleaners only clean.

All purpose cleaner does the job
Mix a batch of this and forget the scrubbing. A carboy full of warm water and PBW will be easily cleaned out after a short soak. I use this for carboys, kegs and bottles with no complaints.
