El Salvador is located in a seismic zone and as such has around 20 (many still active) volcanoes. It is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America and was once part of the Mexican Empire - but gained independence in 1841.

Volcanic soil makes for excellent growing conditions

El Salvador has a rich and fertile central plain which takes up 25% of the country's total land - and creates excellent coffee growing conditions. Indeed, it is in this region that 90% of the country's coffee is produced. And as with all coffee producing nations, El Salvador is developing and beginning to produce some excellent specialty coffees. Fair Trade and Organic coffees are starting to take hold here and are making an impact on the quality of coffee coming out of the region.
