Indonesia Sumatra Retro Sumatra Retro, eh? What's the story behind that? Well...Sumatras have changed over the years. Whereas they used to be more earthy, funky and low-acid, they have become progressively cleaner with less earth, brighter and with more fruit character. Part of this is due to improved processing and shipment methods. But we suspect that increased acidity has to do with the industry favoring higher acid coffees over lower acid ones. Brightness or acidity is considered a prized attribute and more often than not, brighter coffees will be rated higher than lower acid cups. This is bad news for people who dig those funky Sumatras (like us). Although this Sumatra Retro isn't totally funky or earthy it does have those "forest floor" flavors, with a chocolaty fullness and a more restrained brightness. This coffee was specifically sourced for these characteristics because this is what Sumatras used to be like 10-15 years ago. Not only is it an exceptional Sumatra lot, it's educational to see how trends in coffee buying/importing/sourcing have changed over the years. Tasting Notes from Casey "The Coffee Guy": In aroma I get sweet chocolate with smooth and light earth...very nice. In flavor I pull hints of juicy fruit punch, brown sugar, low-key ripe fruit and vanilla. That punchy flavor carries into the aftertaste and is very pleasant. The acid is light+/medium- giving it just enough to be vibrant, but not dominate the flavor. All this with a nice medium fullness. Find similar coffees! Design your own blend with this coffee! Very clean and a medium body. Really nice. At a French Roast, the brightness/acid is still light but the body is slightly fuller. The chocolate notes comes to the foreground and the earth fades to the background. Spice notes with a bitter-sweet character in the aftertaste, but a nice juiciness as well. This is nice just like the Full City, but in a darker roast kind of way. | |||||||||
