Australia Mountain Top XF Australian coffee? Yes, you read correctly. In recent years, great (no, monumental) efforts have been put forth on behalf of The Mountain Top Coffee Company to produce top quality coffee in Australia. The farm is located (as you might have guessed) on a mountain top (Mt Warning near Australia's east coast). This location is a unique because of its cloudy and cool Summers and rich volcanic soil. I met the owner during a presentation at the office of one of our local importers. He talked about nearly every aspect of his sustainable coffee production in great detail...and let me tell you, The Mountain Top Coffee Company is one of the most technologically advanced coffee mills in the world. They are lucky in that they don't need to use pesticides. Because they aren't in a historical coffee growing region, there are no traditional coffee pests to bother the coffee. Because the coffee grows in rich volcanic soil, they don't need to use fertilizers. They have thoroughly studied every aspect of coffee production and honed their process to such an extent that very soon they will be able to offer custom micro-lot production. This means that they can tweak the processing of individual lots of coffee with the push of a button at the mill. Wow! The coffee is very unique. This bin 35 lot was the most distinct and interesting coffee that I've tasted in a long time, and it certainly stood out at the cupping table. I've heard it said that this coffee lends a very nice flavor to espresso. This lot was available in limited quantities and we look forward to even more top-notch coffee from Mountain Top in the coming years! Tasting Notes from Casey "The Coffee Guy": In aroma, I get lots of spice, chocolate, hints of clove with loads of brown sugar and hints of redwood. In flavor, I get tons of brown sugar, lots of chocolate and nuts (hazelnut mostly), vanilla, hints of strawberries, very nice sweetness with a distinct grape character (almost wine-like, but not quite). The acidity is light+ and very pleasant, then just drops down. The medium+ body is very nice. This coffee has near perfect balance...everything is there in perfect amounts. Very nicely done, Mountain Top! Find similar coffees! Design your own blend with this coffee!
