Ethiopia Idido Misty Valley Dry Process So there's a story behind this coffee. There is a local Ethiopian guy who knew about this small micro-region inside the Yirgacheffe coffee growing region (which is actually inside the Sidamo coffee region...wow, this is getting confusing!). The coffee grows at exceptionally high altitudes - around 2,000 meters. He had bought coffee from there before and had always found that it produced outstanding coffee. He decided to set up a coffee mill there and experiment with full natural (dry) processing with extra clean preparation. He did that and sent some samples to the US. About this time, I was visiting an importer and having a cup of coffee in the roasting room. As I took the first sip, I was blown over with flavor. Incredible berries (blueberries), fresh, sweet, smooth, clean - it was a beautiful coffee. I asked about it and they told me the story. That season there were very limited quantities and I didn't manage to snag any - but this year, when the shipment came in, I got as much as I could. And so now we have it. This looks to be a regular offering so I'm pretty excited about it. But it's still limited production, so snatch it up while you can...we don't have THAT much of it! In the aroma, I get sweet hazelnut, rich blueberries (common in really exceptional Ethiopian coffees), and brown sugar. The acid is nice - light+/med- brightness; not dominating or overpowering. The body is light+, just enough to give you some substance with a hint of fullness. In flavor, I get blueberries (it's awesome!) on the back of the tongue, light citrus, vanilla, hints of lemon-vanilla chocolate. Everything fades into a distinct sweetness. Find similar coffees! You find all sorts of flavors packed in here. At the City and light Full City roast, the sweetness, blueberries and light lemon notes are emphasized. As you take the roast into a French Roast and beyond, you lose a lot of these blueberry and sweet notes and the chocolate is emphasized. I feel that this detracts from the really delicate flavors in the cup, so we recommend roasting on the light side. Espresso: At a Full City roast, there is a distinct berry sweetness to the cup with a crisp but restrained acid (not too firm like some Central American coffees). The body is thick and creamy - emphasizing the chocolate and brandy-like notes and hints of tea-rose are hiding in the background. Hazelnut appears as the flavors subside in the aftertaste. | |||||||||||
