Yemen Mocca, Ismailly Yemen is the birthplace of coffee cultivation - not to be confused with Ethiopia (which is credited as being the birthplace of coffee itself). Coffees from this country usually come from four different regions: Mattari, San'ani, Hirazi, and Raimi. You often hear the name "Mokha" or "Mocca" with Yemeni coffee, but don't confuse this with its origin - it's merely the port from which all Yemeni coffee leaves. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect coffees from Yemen to be complex, rich, robust and incredibly distinct. Often acidy and winey, all coffees from this country are dry processed and guaranteed to be strictly Yemeni (not blended with other similar coffees from this region). Because of the relatively low output and high worldwide demand, you will find that the price is usually significantly higher than many other coffees. It is often blended with Indonesian Java coffee in the famous Mocca/Java blend because many feel that the smoother and heavier body qualities of the Java beans complement the brighter and higher notes of the Mocca quite well. Tasting Notes from The Coffee Guy: Rich blueberries in aroma with a slight lantana (like a mint component, but verrry subtle). There is also a wheat-like character to the aroma. In flavor, I get rich chocolate with full, rich blueberries - nice light fruit on the tongue. There is also a cocoa and light sweetness character to the profile and the chocolate intensifies as the coffee cools. Very light acid (almost none) and a medium body means this coffee would work great in a blend or espresso. The aftertaste just keeps on going...up to a minute after a sip; kind of a mix of the blueberries, some sweetness and the chocolate. The blueberry notes and everything else that's in the cup isn't tight and compact like a Sidamo would be though. Rather, the complexity of the flavor hits you and splashes over the palate. This coffee isn't so delicate - it's wild and that's why I love it! Find similar coffees! Design your own blend with this coffee! Blueberries, sweet roasty notes, papaya with very nice sweetness in the aftertaste. So sweet...and the flavor keeps on going. Light brightness/acid and very full body and lots of chocolate. What a coffee! At a French Roast+, I get very full body and light acid, but almost no fruit component. You lose the complexity of this coffee. Definitely stay below a French Roast on this awesome coffee for a drip brewed cup. In an espresso at Full City, I get nice nutty and toasty notes with blueberries in the aroma and flavor. Super sweet and a super full body. Light acid and lots of chocolate with even more chocolate in the aftertaste. In an espresso at French Roast, it loses a bit of the fruit complexity but still has LOTS of the blueberries and chocolate notes. Very full body and light brightness/acid - but the really awesome thing is the sweet milk chocolate that lingers in the aftertaste. Very nice. | |||||||||
