Bolivia is a relatively new to coffee production, getting started only in the 1950's. It's been a slow in gaining momentum, with coffees that would be considered of "specialty coffee" quality appearing only in the past few years. Organic co-ops make up the majority of specialty coffees that do come out of Bolivia, but great coffee can come from an farm/co-op that puts the effort in. Bolivian coffee is relatively high-grown, somewhere between 1,000-2,200 feet in the mountainous regions of the Bolivian highlands.
It has yet to be seen how the new populist president Evo Morales's policies will affect Bolivian coffee exports. His policies don't always economically favor exports and this could make his country's coffee even more scarce than it already is. In general, however, the great Bolivian coffee that you do find is just that: great. With nice sweetness, fruit character and a restrained but lively acid, the coffee can have a bit of complexity that Central American coffees sometimes lack. When you find a great Bolivian coffee, snatch it up while you can. Who knows when you'll see another nice lot!
