Costa Rican, Tres Rios

Costa Rican coffee is known for its bright, citrus like acidity. It is almost always exceedingly clean, well-balanced and mild; definitely a good all around crowd pleaser. A light roast will retain all the nuances of that bright acidity, but the bean will stand up to a somewhat dark roast and still retain good character. Great as a single varietal but also widely used in blends to raise the overall acidity and aromatic character.

Tasting Notes from The Coffee Guy:
In aroma, I get brown sugar and pepper notes. In flavor, the brown sugar and pepper are certainly there, coupled with lemon/citrus, a slight herbal fullness (which you'll get in a nice Costa) and an excellent sweetness. The acid is superb: a lively, zippy medium+ that fades away quickly. The body is super-full...very supportive of the rest of the cup. These flavors all fade away to a resonant brightness with a lemon edge. This is an awesome coffee!

Roasting Notes:
At a Full City roast, this coffee is very bright with high acidity and lots of caramel notes. Lots of spice notes with hints of tumeric. A Full City roast is going to be a bit too much for most people. You really need to go darker to tame that zinging brightness.

At a French Roast, this coffee is very nice and full; almost completely different from the Full City. With the acidity lessened by the darker roast, you get a very nice sweetness with light acid and very full body. The flavors are very clean (Central American Coffee lovers will love this) with distinct cocoa notes. Very good balance. This coffee would be the perfect base for a nice blend. It's very full without any aggressive characteristics that will distract from the blend.

In a shot of espresso, at Full City roast, this coffee is very full in aroma with balanced herbal notes, lemon and spice. The flavor has lemon juice and butter notes with a medium+ bright and zippy acidity. Medium- body with light caramel. If you are a light roast lover, you will like the sweetness and brightness of this coffee - but it might be a bit much for dark roast lovers.

At a French Roast, there are nice roasty notes with a pleasant berry perfumeyness, full body and light acid. There is a lot of cocoa powder character in the aftertaste with a low-level ripe fruit character and hints of lemon. I also get a light freshly ground pepper character in the aftertaste.

I would say your ideal espresso roast will be somewhere between oily and not oily - maybe a dark Full City to get the best of both worlds.
